Humans, Not Hangers: Why It’s Time to Regulate the U.S. Fashion Industry

Slender, and even skeletal, women have long been romanticized in the West, largely thanks to the omnipresent fashion industry saturating media of all types — print, online and broadcast — with images of rail-thin women. This takes a toll: Many runway models have a body mass index, or BMI, of less than 16, a degree of thinness so severe in an adult that the World Health Organization considers it an indicator of life-threatening starvation.

France clamps down on ultra-thin models, requires medical cert

French lawmakers on Thursday adopted a bill forcing ultra-thin models to furnish a doctor's certificate confirming they are healthy and magazines that Photoshop their silhouette to tag the images as “touched up”. The bill stipulates that models must obtain a medical certificate stating that their health, “assessed in particular in terms of body mass index, is compatible with the practise of the (modelling) profession”. An earlier draft of the bill had caused howls of protest in the fashion industry by proposing that a minimum body mass index (a measure of body fat based on height and weight) be imposed for models.
