British Fashion Council debuts revamped global fashion event to rival Met Ball

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has joined forces with luxury jewelry label Swarovski to re-imagine the British Fashion Awards, newly dubbed The Fashion Awards 2016. The Fashion Awards 2016, to take place on December 5 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, will herald a new global focus, with awards aiming to honor international talent from both the creative and business sides of the industry. The annual awards event will also aim to attract a bigger, public audience with the venue at the Royal Albert Hall able to host just over 3,000 attendees, with half of these seats to be available for purchase by the general public, starting Tuesday, May 3.

British fashion brand 1205 dives into e-commerce

British label 1205 has launched its first e-commerce site to cater to its international clientele. The brand, under creative director Paula Gerbase, will debut 1205.eu with the spring 2016 collection, with a selection of items available exclusively online, including a biker jacket, a short sleeve shirt and oversize white shirts.

Cool Asian fashion brands challenge Western labels

By Astrid Wendlandt and Joyce Lee SEOUL (Reuters) – Fashion brands from South Korea, China and Japan are becoming serious rivals of their Western peers as Asian consumers become increasingly confident in their own style and take pride in buying home-grown labels. Asian consumers are the world's biggest spenders on high-end fashion, representing around half of total buyers. Most of them are under 35, Internet-savvy and increasingly on the hunt for small, cool, original brands that will make them stand out and look different from their parents, fashion executives and retailers say.

Pia Mia named Fashion Director for Madonna’s Material Girl line

The 19-year-old American singer, songwriter and model Pia Mia (Perez) has been chosen by Madonna to act as Fashion Director for her Macy's junior line Material Girl, it was announced by WWD. Inspired by her daughter Lourdes, who is also 19, Madonna first created the Material Girl junior line in 2010.

Fashion’s deadliest disaster prompts Bangladeshi workers to opt for university

By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – It was a disaster which shook the global fashion industry – laying bare the stark reality of the dangerous factory conditions faced by millions of Bangladeshis who stitch the clothes sold in the gleaming high street stores of the West. In all, the bodies of 1,136 garment workers were pulled out of the rubble when the Rana Plaza building – an eight-floor factory complex supplying clothes to big brand fashion retailers – collapsed in April 2013 on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital. Three years on, as experts lament how government, retailers, factory owners and consumers have done little to safeguard workers, a small miracle has emerged from the tragedy and is slowly taking shape in the southeastern corner of the country.
