Ex-leper takes to Tokyo runway to fight stigma

At 83 Miyo Maki had never manicured her nails, thickened and deformed due to leprosy, a disease she was diagnosed with when she was just 10 years old. Later that day, she walked down the runway, wearing a white lace dress and basking in the limelight long denied to her and other leprosy patients because of an overwhelming stigma against the disease. “I think this show represents a step forward in the history of leprosy,” she said.

Disco sequins, flattering stripes and flirty florals: the patterns you need to know about for Spring/Summer 2017

In New York Marc Jacobs sent models down the runway in glittery mini dresses and sparkly jackets while Ralph Lauren went for a luxe vibe with slinky, clingy evening gowns that caught the light. Versus Versace shimmered through London in metallic skirts and Dolce & Gabbana doused everything, from full-length coats to hot pants, in spangle in Milan. Paris was a veritable hothouse of glitter, with Elie Saab, Nina Ricci and Kenzo just a handful of the labels to indulge their festive sides.

Paris Fashion Week shimmers through final weekend

Paris Fashion Week danced through its final weekend in a flurry of sequins, lace and watering bucket hats — but there were some more subdued moments, too. Mugler kicked things off with a series of sporty, iridescent dresses in gunmetal greys and silvers that flashed down the runway. Elie Saab followed, having caught a case of disco fever for Spring/Summer 2017, debuting a gloriously sparkly feel-good collection comprising red carpet-friendly sequined gowns and metallic tuxedos.

Guillaume Henry for Nina Ricci: "This season, I wanted a silhouette that borrows from the codes of sport"

Relaxnews caught up with Guillaume Henry, creative director of Nina Ricci, after the label's Paris Fashion Week show. What interests me the most about fashion is the narrative, emotional aspect, and this season, I wanted a silhouette that borrows from the codes of sport. This collection sees the classic “[Avenue] Montaigne vocabulary” — which I love — combined with sporty touches.

Horrifying bejeweled crocs hit the runway in London’s Fashion Week

The ugly shoe craze is not over.  We've seen what happens when Uggs and Tevas team up, and even the horrifying invention of cowboy boot sandals. Now, we must stomach the crème de la crème of ugly shoes: bejeweled crocs.  London designer Christopher Kane teamed up with Crocs to create this sparkly monstrosity for his Spring 2017 in London's fashion week. The theme of his show, “Make Do & Mend,” is inspired by 1940's pragmatism and questions our faith in high fashion standards. Kane's metallic crocs are decorated with precious stones, such as diaspro, red leopard malachite and zebra jasper and will actually be produced and sold.  SEE ALSO: Ugg and Teva's new mashup 'sandals' are confusingly impractical Oh no  #crocs#christopherkane A photo posted by Michelle Vaughan (@mich_vaughan) on Sep 19, 2016 at 11:14am PDT As if we haven't been through enough, these crocs are paired with floral dresses and formal evening wear, because nothing screams, “night-at-the-opera,” at the top of their lungs like a pair of crocs.  It seems the designer's collection sparked genuine confusion on twitter as well.  Please explain to me why Christopher Kane sent crocs down the runway — k-la (@KaylaManjarrez) September 19, 2016 Crocs happened at Christopher Kane?!! I can't wait to see how this plays out! — Grace Timothy (@GraceTimothy) September 19, 2016 If Christopher Kane just ordained Crocs as the new ironic shoe du jour I'm gonna lose it — Misty White Sidell (@MistyWhiteS) September 19, 2016 When will it end?

Vera Wang serves up dark mystery for powerful women

Designer to the stars Vera Wang perfected the latest trend for structured fashion Tuesday by sending down the runway wool peplums, evening wear decorated with glass pearls and airy ruched skirts. Most famous for her A-list wedding and red carpet gowns favored by the likes of Chelsea Clinton and Hollywood royalty, the veteran New York designer nonetheless prefers black and white on the catwalk. The spring/summer 2017 collection was all about power, craft and mystery she told AFP after the show, which was watched by Tony-winning actress Cynthia Erivo and suspended Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova from the front row.

India acid attack survivor redefines beauty at NY Fashion Week

By Patricia Reaney NEW YORK (Reuters) – An Indian model scarred in an acid attack challenged perceptions of beauty as she strutted down the runway at New York Fashion Week to promote a ban on the sale of corrosive substances used to maim thousands of women and children each year. A smiling Reshma Quereshi, 19, opened the FTL Moda show on Thursday to applause in a long-sleeve, white gown with embroidered appliques by Indian designer Archana Kochhar during her first trip to the United States. The buzz and glamour of the event was a world away from Allahbad, India, where she suffered severe facial burns and lost an eye two years ago after being attacked with sulfuric acid by her estranged brother-in-law and two men.
