Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ Gown Sold for $4.8 Million

The figure-hugging gown Marilyn Monroe wore to serenade President John F.Kennedy for his 45th birthday smashed its guide price to sell for $4.8 million at auction on Thursday. The flesh-colored dress, adorned with 2,500 hand-stitched crystals, had been expected to fetch between $2-3 million, Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills said. The dress was so tight on Monroe that the legendary actress wore nothing underneath and had to be sewn into it at the last minute before stepping on stage at Madison Square Garden in 1962 to sing to JFK in her trademark sultry voice, according to the auction house.

Indonesian president’s call for calm makes fashion statement

By Fergus Jensen and Fransiska Nangoy JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo called for calm after a violent protest by hardline Muslims last week, yet it was his khaki bomber jacket that excited social media and triggered a rush by Indonesians to snap up similar clothing across the country. The president, who normally wears a simple, white long-sleeved shirt, is rarely seen as a fashion icon by young Indonesians, who are among the world's biggest users of social media like Twitter and Facebook. Police resorted to using tear gas and water cannon after clashes with Muslim hardliners calling for the resignation of Jakarta's Christian governor.

Suited for summit, dapper Duterte tries the presidential look

By Mai Nguyen VIENTIANE (Reuters) – Controversial Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte donned a lounge suit for his first international summit on Wednesday, a rare show of sartorial conformity as pressure mounts on him to act presidential. The maverick former city mayor, who was shunned on Tuesday by the White House for insulting U.S. President Barack Obama over his bloody “war on drugs”, looked dapper as he posed for pictures in a classic, two-button charcoal suit and silk tie. Filipinos are drawn to Duterte's no-nonsense, man-of-the-people style, which sits oddly with the pomp and protocol he encountered at this week's meeting of Southeast Asian leaders in Laos.
