Margaret Thatcher's bodyguard would carry her high heels into the Kremlin and the ex-prime minister wore trousers only down a coal mine, according to an auction catalogue of her belongings. Charles Powell, who acted as her private secretary, said Thatcher borrowed a fur coat and boots when she attended Soviet leader Yury Andropov's funeral because of the harsh winter weather in February 1984. “Her Special Branch bodyguard loomed behind her, his pockets bulging with what Russian security assumed to be impressive weaponry,” Powell was quoted as saying in the catalogue published this week.

Jean Paul Gaultier to design Target collection

Jean Paul Gaultier is teaming up with supermarket chain Target on a fashion collection. The French designer will work with the store on a range of womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and homeware, Australian Vogue reports. The collection will comprise around 100 products and will launch in Australia in 2016.

Versace opens new Tokyo boutique

Versace is focusing on its presence in Japan with the opening of a new boutique in Tokyo's Ginza district. Conceived by designer Donatella Versace in collaboration with English architect Jamie Fobert, the store occupies an area of 430 square meters, featuring marble mosaics, floors inspired by Byzantine churches of the Ninth Century and brass and perspex walls and shelving that appear to float in mid-air. “I just adore the design concept of the new Versace Stores, which pays tribute to Italy's cultural heritage,” said Versace.

Beyoncé Knowles is working with British retail tycoon Sir Philip Green on her own clothing brand. As head of the Arcadia Group, Sir Philip Green owns a host of fashion retailers including Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Miss Selfridge. News that Beyoncé was considering a move into fashion first surfaced at the end of 2014 when it was revealed she'd held discussions with Green regarding the creation of a new global clothing company — Parkwood Topshop.

H&M launches new sustainable collection inspired by Paris museum

H&M is teaming up with Paris's Musée des Arts Décoratifs on its new “Conscious Exclusive 2016” fashion collection. Inspired by the archives of the museum, the sustainable collection features “modern red carpet pieces infused with tactile charm, a nostalgic aesthetic and a historical legacy.” The design team worked with new innovative materials such as beads and rhinestones made from recycled glass and Denimite, a material made from recycled worn-out denim. The collection will launch on April 7, 2016, to coincide with the opening of the exhibition “Fashion Forward – Three Centuries of Fashion”.

21-year-old Frenchman wins Elite Model Look contest

The 32nd International Final of the Elite Model Look contest has been won by Tristan, a 21 year-old Frenchman, and Anouk, who is 15 and from the Netherlands. Both of these aspiring models have won a three-year contract with the Elite group agencies. This international final was held in Milan, Italy, before an invited audience and a jury that included Victoria da Silva, president of Elite Model Look International, Vick Mihaci, president of Elite Management Worldwide, and Marilena Borgna, casting director at Vogue Italia.

Africa’s top fashion event called off over terror fears

Africa's prime fashion event, the two-yearly FIMA festival in Niger, was called off Tuesday on the eve of its launch over fears of terror attacks, Niger designer Alphadi announced. “The Niger government has decided to postpone this 10th edition of FIMA due to events in Diffa (southeast Niger), Mali, Chad, Cameroon, France,” said Alphadi, a prominent couturier whose real name is Seidnaly Sidhamed. Due to have gathered some 1,000 designers, models and fashion types from 40 nations for Africa's November 25-29 fashion week, the festival will take place “very soon”, he added without giving a date.

Burberry teams up with Google on personalized campaign videos

Burberry has teamed up with Google to allow customers to star in their very own version of its festive campaign. “The Burberry Booth,” which is powered by the tech giant, uses real-time video stitching technology to let clients appear alongside some of the Festive Film's cast members in a 15-second edit of its latest “Billy Elliot”-inspired campaign film. To coincide with the launch of booth, the brand has also released a short film on YouTube of its Festive campaign cast, including Naomi Campbell, James Corden and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley offering tips on how to jump using a trampoline.
