World’s first albino beauty pageant in Kenya defies deadly stigma

By Amanda Fisher NAIROBI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – With its evening gowns, celebrity judges and tears of joy, the beauty pageant in Kenya’s capital was like others elsewhere, except for one thing – all 20 contestants who strutted, sashayed and swaggered down the catwalk had albinism. The competition, which drew a crowd of about 1,000 including Deputy President William Ruto, was designed to celebrate people with albinism – who lack pigment in their skin, hair and eyes – and challenge stigma and persecution. “Even when I was dating, it was difficult for girls to say I’m handsome,” said Isaac Mwaura, Kenya’s first parliamentarian with albinism and founder of the Albinism Society of Kenya, which organized the pageant.

There was much to learn from the beauty looks seen on the catwalks of Milan Fashion Week last week. Salvatore Ferragamo slicked the waves down flat to the head using wet-look gel for an androgynous look, adding a low-scooped ponytail at the nape of the neck for a contemporary twist. France marvels at class of woman who made Proust swoon

Now a new exhibition opens the wardrobe door on the 20th century's first great fashion trendsetter, Elisabeth, Countess Greffulhe, the woman Proust immortalised as the beautiful Duchess of Guermantes in his literary masterpiece “A la recherche du temps perdu” (“Remembrance of Things Past”). “All the mystery of her beauty was in her brightness, in her enigma and most of all in her eyes,” Proust wrote in 1893 to the poet and dandy Robert de Montesquiou, who despite being her uncle was just as smitten. The countess also knew how to make a grand entrance — and also how to leave her public wanting more, never staying very long at any of the balls and grand soirees of belle epoque Paris, where she of course arrived fashionably late.
