Models in underwear captivate in Paris

Models wearing spectacular lingerie creations wowed fashions' glitterati on Wednesday night during the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show at the Grand Palais in Paris. Goose bumps and bruises as Victoria’s Secret models take to Paris catwalk

It took a fair bit of cheek — and not a little phlegm on a freezing Paris night — for the brash US lingerie brand Victoria's Secret to hold its first-ever fashion show in the city that invented sexy underwear. Lady Gaga — the star draw for the annual extragavanza famous for bringing kitschy Las Vegas glamour to the catwalk — picked up a “couple of bruises from (the) dance rehearsal”, she told her 64 million Twitter followers. The show's mostly American models said they felt “goose bumps” — and not just because of the sub-freezing temperatures.

Curves rule the Lagos catwalk

Karl Lagerfeld once sniffed that “no one wants to see curvy women” on the runway, but a wave of Nigerian designers are proving him wrong. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if he was in Africa, he probably wouldn't make that statement,” designer Aisha Abubakar Achonu told AFP backstage. Unlike the hesitant, calf-like models before them, the curvy women owned the runway, blowing kisses to the cameras as they shimmied down the catwalk to hoots and cheers.

World’s first albino beauty pageant in Kenya defies deadly stigma

By Amanda Fisher NAIROBI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – With its evening gowns, celebrity judges and tears of joy, the beauty pageant in Kenya’s capital was like others elsewhere, except for one thing – all 20 contestants who strutted, sashayed and swaggered down the catwalk had albinism. The competition, which drew a crowd of about 1,000 including Deputy President William Ruto, was designed to celebrate people with albinism – who lack pigment in their skin, hair and eyes – and challenge stigma and persecution. “Even when I was dating, it was difficult for girls to say I’m handsome,” said Isaac Mwaura, Kenya’s first parliamentarian with albinism and founder of the Albinism Society of Kenya, which organized the pageant.

Jarrar lifts pall over Lanvin with classy Paris show

Bouchra Jarrar pulled off an impeccable debut Lanvin show on Wednesday at Paris fashion week despite the storm clouds still swirling around the troubled French label. The 45-year-old French designer took the helm of the fashion capital's oldest couture house in March, five months after the shock sacking of its charismatic guiding light Alber Elbaz. The hugely popular Elbaz had dragged the house from near oblivion during his 14 years in charge, and his departure sparked a revolt by staff and a haemorrhage of talent.
