WIDER IMAGE-Olympics-Cycling-American BMX racer bounces back from broken hand

By Mary Milliken RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 5 (Reuters) – BMX cyclists might have the fastest first two seconds of any event in the Olympic Games – coming out of a gate on an eight-meter high wall and going from zero to 56 km per hour in just two beats. For American racer and two-time Olympian Connor Fields, those two seconds account for 75 percent of his training and often determine if he can win the race which usually lasts less than 40 seconds. “We work our butts off and I think we have one of the most difficult sports in the Games because we require so many different skills,” said Fields while training in California before he heads to Rio de Janeiro for his event on Aug. 17-19.

Georgia’s conservative Olympic outfit scorned by women’s rights activists

By Umberto Bacchi LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Women's rights activists in Georgia have urged the country's Olympic Committee to pick a more liberal design for its female athletes, criticizing the official outfits for next month's opening ceremony at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games as archaic. Inspired by the national costume, the outfit has been a major talking point in the former Soviet republic over the past few days, with many taking to social media to complain it projected the wrong image of the nation abroad. “It's very archaic and conservative,” said Baia Pataraia from the Georgian Women Movement.

South Korea seeks Zika protection in Rio, Brits go patriotic

South Korean athletes will make their Rio Olympics entrance covered up in long sleeves and trousers, uniforms its designers say were made to protect them from Zika-carrying mosquitoes. With 100 days to go until the Games start in Rio de Janeiro, South Korea's Olympic Committee unveiled on Wednesday the uniforms its athletes will be dressed in when they arrive in Brazil and take part in ceremonies. An outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, linked to numerous cases of the microcephaly birth defect in Brazil, has spread in Latin America and the Caribbean, causing panic and leading some athletes to consider whether to attend the Games.

Korean designers set the bar high at London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week opened with a bang Friday as Seoul-born designer J. JS Lee debuted a bold Autumn/Winter 2016 collection for the modern female power dresser. The current fervor for all things monochromatic played a huge part in the show, with entire outfits crafted from a single hue, drawing attention to the collection's fluid lines and clever layering (pencil skirts over trousers, anyone?). It was a hard act to follow, but fellow Korean talent Eudon Choi managed it deftly, showcasing an afternoon collection that bore a similar reverence to structure but a lighter, more delicate touch.
