Hugo Boss cuts brands to return to growth by 2018

The new chief executive of Hugo Boss said he expects to return the struggling German fashion house to growth in 2018, announcing plans to simplify its brand portfolio and adjust prices in a bid to appeal to younger customers. Mark Langer, the former finance chief who was appointed CEO in May, said the company will focus in future on two main brands – upper premium businesswear under the BOSS label, and a new positioning for its HUGO label for a younger audience. Ahead of an investor day in London, Boss said it expected 2017 to be a year of stabilization, predicting a return to growth in 2018, with plans to harmonize prices across the globe set to be completed by the end of 2018.

Stella McCartney inspired by Dad for debut men’s fashion line

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian and Jane Witherspoon LONDON (Reuters) – Fashion designer Stella McCartney drew inspiration from her Beatle father Paul when creating her first menswear collection, unveiling both relaxed and tailored looks for the male wardrobe. “It just felt like the right time, it felt like the womenswear was really in the perfect place to then have her man in her life and just to offer that wardrobe to men,” McCartney told Reuters. Asked if her famous father would wear the new line, McCartney said: “Yeah definitely, there’s a lot of inspiration obviously in him in the collection, so … he better be wearing it.” For outerwear, there was a mix of big-pocketed jackets, trenchcoats, raincoats and bomber jackets.

Mert & Marcus fashion photography exhibition opens in Paris

After completing its London stint November 3, the “Mert & Marcus: Works 2001-2014” exhibition is heading to the French capital from November 9 to 16. This is the first major retrospective dedicated to the famous fashion photography duo Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. Auctioneers Phillips has joined forces with Art Partner to present the “Mert & Marcus: Works 2001-2014” exhibition.

Apple star Marc Newson designs Fashion Awards 2016 trophy

Industrial designer Marc Newson has teamed up with The British Fashion Council and Swarovski to create the trophies for the upcoming Fashion Awards 2016. Fabricated from Swarovski Crystal, the hexagonal trophy was inspired by the idea of “crystal clusters and rock structures.” Each piece measures 245mm by 67mm and will be handcrafted at Swarovski's headquarters in Wattens, Austria, before being delivered to London ahead of the awards ceremony on December 5. “Swarovski crystal is a fantastic material to work with, and I am happy with the striking visual effect that has been created from the reflections of each individual trophy when set together,” says Newson.

Burberry marks 160 years with video about founder

LONDON(Reuters) – British fashion house Burberry, known for its beige trench coats and signature check print, is marking its 160th anniversary this year with a video about its founder shot in the form of a cinematic trailer. At three minutes long, “The Tale of Thomas Burberry” is a fictionalized account of the founder's story and stars “The Revenant” actor Domhnall Gleeson as the protagonist. Directed by Asif Kapadia who won an Oscar for documentary “Amy”, the video kicks off the company's Christmas campaign and recalls Burberry's invention of weatherproof fabric gabardine. …

Forget Paris, focus on Tokyo, Japan fashion told

Tokyo may be the style capital of Asia, but with South Korea and China snapping at its heels and Japan's most iconic brands rooted in Europe, the city is being urged to haul its fashion week into the big leagues. Tokyo Fashion Week kicked off its spring/summer 2017 season showcase on Monday with six days of events intended to promote 50 brands, a mixture of the established and the new. Tokyo Fashion Week attracts only 50,000 visitors — just a quarter of the total number that attend New York's two annual fashion weeks, and also lagging behind London, Paris and Milan.
