Accra fashion week fights for female empowerment

Reality star Kim Kardashian and singer Rihanna may have popularised the style overseas, but in conservative Ghana, African designers are hoping to use these racy looks to help young women challenge the traditional status quo. “Everyone should be able to express themselves and not be oppressed in any way,” said designer Josefa Da Silva, an effervescent 29-year-old sporting a halo of ink-blue hair. Da Silva, a native of Cape Verde based in the United States, isn't afraid to make a statement with her designs.

Livestreaming, virtual reality and fairgrounds: fashion gets innovative for fall

Blame it on the unpredictable seasonal weather, the consequences of social media or the varying needs of the modern day customer, but the truth is that the traditional cycle of catwalk shows and campaigns is gradually being infiltrated with alternative and innovative strategies for engaging with consumers. Fashion shows were once the prerogative of the privileged few — but not anymore. Tom Ford kicked off New York Fashion Week this week with an intimate star-studded dinner that also served as his Spring/Summer 2017 collection, streamed live on his website and immediately available for purchase.

Vyshyvanka: Ukraine’s national costume conquers the catwalk

Fashionistas the world over are snatching up a must-have item for the “boho chic” look — an embroidered blouse or dress that is, in fact, Ukraine's national costume and new symbol of unity. It is “this summer's most sought-after item of clothing”, proclaimed the Times of London, while the New York Times advised readers to stock up on this “top of summer” fashion. The style came back out of the closet after Ukraine's 2014 pro-Western revolt pulled the ex-Soviet republic out of Russia's orbit and gave it a new sense of national pride.

New York Fashion Week gets nostalgic

There was a distinct whiff of Americana on the catwalks of New York at the start of the week, as the Autumn / Winter 2016 ready-to-wear collections offered throwbacks to a simpler time. Tommy Hilfiger led the way with an ocean liner-themed collection that riffed on the traditional glamour of transatlantic travel. Also channelling a very American, although albeit more East coast, vibe was Tory Burch.
