Australian Fashion Foundation names hot new talent in annual awards ceremony

The Australian Fashion Foundation (AUSFF) has revealed the winners of its 2016/2017 annual internship program. Womenswear designer Deanna Fanning and menswear designer Hannah Tan took home the top prize, receiving a financial grant and internship opportunities worth more than AU$20,000 (approximately US$14,500). The up-and-coming duo will be able to complete their internships in the US or Europe, stopping in Hong Kong on the way to meet with industry experts at textile brand The Woolmark Company's new Wool Resource Centre to learn about the industry and the key manufacturers, spinners and weavers in China.

Women take center stage in Dior spring/summer 2017 campaign

French fashion house Dior has unveiled the advertising campaign for its spring/summer 2017 collection, the first ready-to-wear line overseen by new creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. In the spirit of the catwalk show, which previewed the collection in September, the Italian designer's feminist values play a key role in the project, designed by, with and for women. The eagerly awaited Dior spring/summer 2017 show caused a sensation back in September, when the fashion world discovered the label's first collection from Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female creative director in the history of the French fashion house.

Bangladeshi slum kids work over 60 hours a week to make clothes: research

By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – One third of children living in the slums of Bangladesh’s capital spend more than 60 hours a week making clothes for the garment sector, well beyond the legal working limit, a London-based thinktank said on Wednesday. The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) said 32 percent of children aged between 10 and 14 living in Dhaka’s slum settlements were out of school and engaged in full-time work in clothing factories – according to a survey of 2,700 children. “Our survey raises serious concerns over the issue of child labor in the supply of garments from factories in Bangladesh to consumers in Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere,” ODI said.

British photographer David Hamilton dies in Paris -police source

British art photographer David Hamilton died in Paris on Friday at the age of 83 after committing suicide, a police source told Reuters. Hamilton, who was born in London but had lived much of his life in France, was found unresponsive in his Paris apartment by a neighbor who alerted emergency services, French radio station Europe 1 reported. Hamilton, whose work appeared in high-end fashion magazines, was known for his images of nude or underclothed young models which drew some controversy.

Forget Paris, focus on Tokyo, Japan fashion told

Tokyo may be the style capital of Asia, but with South Korea and China snapping at its heels and Japan's most iconic brands rooted in Europe, the city is being urged to haul its fashion week into the big leagues. Tokyo Fashion Week kicked off its spring/summer 2017 season showcase on Monday with six days of events intended to promote 50 brands, a mixture of the established and the new. Tokyo Fashion Week attracts only 50,000 visitors — just a quarter of the total number that attend New York's two annual fashion weeks, and also lagging behind London, Paris and Milan.

Adidas to open shoe factory in Atlanta in 2017

Adidas will open a new factory near Atlanta in 2017 largely operated by robots, part of a drive to shift production closer to customers and counter rising wages in Asia and lengthy shipping times. The sportswear company has already started work at a similar factory in the southern German town of Ansbach. Founded by German cobbler Adi Dassler in 1949, Adidas had closed all but one of its 10 shoe factories in Germany by 1993 as it shifted most production from Europe to lower-cost Asia, particularly China and Vietnam.

With what seems like half of Europe's male population in football shirts for the Euro 2016 championships, Paris designers will try to lift the tone Wednesday with the start of men's fashion week.
