Coach marks 75 years in fashion with New York show

Fashion house Coach celebrated its 75th anniversary in style on Thursday night, with a Pre-Fall runway show at New York's Pier 94. The show was a love letter from British Executive Creative Director Stuart Vevers to New York and the US in general, blending the city's individualism with the laidback attitude of the West Coast. “New York City, the spiritual home of Coach, is a cultural melting pot that embraces individuality and celebrates togetherness,” said Vevers.

Curves rule the Lagos catwalk

Karl Lagerfeld once sniffed that “no one wants to see curvy women” on the runway, but a wave of Nigerian designers are proving him wrong. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if he was in Africa, he probably wouldn't make that statement,” designer Aisha Abubakar Achonu told AFP backstage. Unlike the hesitant, calf-like models before them, the curvy women owned the runway, blowing kisses to the cameras as they shimmied down the catwalk to hoots and cheers.

Okinawa fashion: new style for Japan’s tropical islands

Okinawa, the Japanese archipelago home to thousands of US troops and popular with scuba divers, is looking beyond its beach resorts and World War II battle sites to bag a spot in high fashion. A two and a half hour flight from Tokyo and closer to Taiwan, Okinawa couldn't be more different from the Japanese capital, where the fashion set reach for tights and tailored jackets on even a balmy autumn day and look down their noses at homespun “resort wear”. Both directors jetted into Tokyo for fashion week to meet buyers and journalists, but instead opted to stage their runway shows on Okinawa Island — live streaming them online to reach a wider audience.

Paris Fashion Week shimmers through final weekend

Paris Fashion Week danced through its final weekend in a flurry of sequins, lace and watering bucket hats — but there were some more subdued moments, too. Mugler kicked things off with a series of sporty, iridescent dresses in gunmetal greys and silvers that flashed down the runway. Elie Saab followed, having caught a case of disco fever for Spring/Summer 2017, debuting a gloriously sparkly feel-good collection comprising red carpet-friendly sequined gowns and metallic tuxedos.
