Bolivian designer exports high-end indigenous fashion

Centuries ago, Spanish colonizers forced their Bolivian servants to wear the puffy skirts that have come to symbolize the country's “cholitas,” or indigenous women. Today, one local designer is turning the tables with plans to export high-end cholita fashion — blossoming skirts, bowler hats and intricately woven shawls — to Madrid, Paris and beyond. Fresh off her first show at New York Fashion Week, Eliana Paco, a 34-year-old indigenous Aymara designer, is ready to bring her take on a once-stigmatized style to the world.

Caroline de Maigret tests out Chanel’s new Derby shoe

The French model can be seen sporting the new two-tone shoes in a black-and-white short film directed by Bertrand le Pluard for the luxury fashion house. The clip, which De Maigret has posted to her Instagram account, sees her skipping around the streets of her hometown of Paris, having teamed the tomboy-style shoes with rolled-up masculine trousers and a fine knit sweater. The androgynous footwear, part of the label's 2016/17 cruise collection, feature a various smooth, patent, exotic and even perforated leather uppers, topped off with a black leather toe — a reference to the brand's founder Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel's first shoe designs in 1957.

Forget Paris, focus on Tokyo, Japan fashion told

Tokyo may be the style capital of Asia, but with South Korea and China snapping at its heels and Japan's most iconic brands rooted in Europe, the city is being urged to haul its fashion week into the big leagues. Tokyo Fashion Week kicked off its spring/summer 2017 season showcase on Monday with six days of events intended to promote 50 brands, a mixture of the established and the new. Tokyo Fashion Week attracts only 50,000 visitors — just a quarter of the total number that attend New York's two annual fashion weeks, and also lagging behind London, Paris and Milan.
