Lanvin hires Bouchra Jarrar to replace Elbaz as designer

By Astrid Wendlandt PARIS (Reuters) – Lanvin has hired Bouchra Jarrar as its new designer five months after the abrupt dismissal of Alber Elbaz caused uncertainty about the future of France's oldest fashion house. Paris-born of Moroccan descent, Jarrar, 45, is known for her black and white neo-classic outfits and feminine tuxedo jackets. Previously, Jarrar worked closely for a decade with former Balenciaga designer, Nicolas Ghesquiere, who is now at LVMH's Louis Vuitton, and at Christian Lacroix Couture.

Paris Fashion Week wraps up with sporty, edgy leather from Vuitton

French luxury label Louis Vuitton wrapped up Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday with sporty, edgy looks for next winter, offering plenty of leather for outerwear, trousers and dresses. On a catwalk spiked with mirror columns, designer Nicolas Ghesquiere opened the autumn/winter 2016/2017 show with a black coat adorned with golden buttons and cinched at the waist over shiny red leather trousers and combat-style boots. Ghesquiere, who has led a renaissance of the brand known for its monogrammed leather bags, also presented T-shirt-like dresses in bold geometric patterns – blue, red, white and black – in front of guests including Oscar winner Alicia Vikander.

Six memorable looks from Paris fashion week

Saint Laurent went full-throttle killer miniskirt glam, but the decade was also there in the hugely influential Vetements and Balenciago shows, Kenzo, Veronique Leroy, Maison Margiela, Lanvin and Giambattista Valli. Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Taiwanese star Shiatzy Chen all went for black leather bustiers, with the last two pairing them with skinhead and dominatrix boots to up the kick-ass attitude. Valentino even toughened up the tutu, with Sacai, John Galliano and Margiela all taking a military bearing.

Bold, colourful prints kick off Paris Fashion Week

After fashion weeks in New York, London and Milan, Paris stepped onto the seasonal catwalk on Tuesday, with Dutch designer Liselore Frowijn among the first to present her fall collection in the French capital. Paris, home to world-renowned luxury brands such as Chanel, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton, hosts nine days of catwalk shows and presentations where designers will unveil their womenswear creations for autumn/winter 2016/2017. With the late Niki de Saint Phalle as muse, Frowijn paid homage to female artists and “strong women” in her “Let's Hear It For The Lions” collection of bold, colourful outfits.

Following ready-to-wear designers and fashion houses on social media is a fabulous way to take in Paris Fashion Week. The creative director of women's collections at Louis Vuitton often post shots of campaigns and catwalk shows (among other things) to his Instagram account. As well as being treated to pictures of Vuitton's new collection, his 325,000 followers could get a look behind the scenes at the upcoming Paris show, and maybe even the after-show party.

Lured by the “Korean Wave” of culture exports, from soap operas and K-pop music to food and fashion, price-conscious younger Chinese visitors are seeking a more authentic and less expensive shopping experience. South Korea trails only Thailand as an overseas destination for Chinese travelers, whose heavy retail spending has helped make South Korea the world's largest duty free shopping market.
