‘Masterworks’ at the Met puts focus on fashion as an art form

Opening at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 18, the Costume Institute's fall 2016 exhibition, “Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion,” will put the spotlight on the collecting strategies that have helped the department acquire iconic works from the history of fashion. The exhibition will feature about 60 such masterworks, dating from the early 18th century to the present and acquired by the Costume Institute in the last ten years. Ensembles will be displayed in packing crates — as though they've just arrived at the Met — accompanied by an explanation of their significance in the fashion industry.

Paris exhibition explores fashion’s shocks and scandals through the ages

The French capital's Musée des Arts Décoratifs explores scandals and transgressions in clothing from the 14th century to the present day in an exhibition entitled “Tenue correcte exigée, quand le vêtement fait scandale” (Appropriate dress required: when clothing causes a scandal), from December 1, 2016, to April 23, 2017. The show looks back at major turning points in the history of fashion, when designers and famous personalities broke established societal codes with pioneering styles. The exhibition, designed by Constance Guisset, features more than 400 garments, accessories, caricature portraits and small objects linked to fashion's many transgressions from the clothing conventions imposed by society, taste, etiquette or an individual's status.

Corsets, stockings and David Beckham’s briefs: the V&A announces its latest fashion show

The history of underwear is about to come to light, thanks to a new fashion exhibition in London. “Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear” at the Victoria and Albert Museum will tell the story of underwear design from the 18th century to the present day, exploring the relationship between underwear and fashion, notions of the ideal body, and the ways that cut, fit, fabric and decoration can reveal issues of gender, sex and morality. From long cotton drawers worn by Queen Victoria's mother to the packaging for a pair of David Beckham for H&M briefs from 2012, more than 200 examples of undergarments will be on show during the exhibition.
