It was a shake-things-up kind of night for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America’s awards ceremony, which included a new location and longer program, a surprise guest and a lot of unique looks. Now at the Hammerstein Ballroom, after years of being held at Lincoln Center, Monday’s awards included a sit-down dinner and musical tributes to Prince by Jennifer Hudson, and to David Bowie by Michael C. Hall. This year, the council also kept the winner of the Fashion Icon award under wraps, making Beyoncé’s entrance especially exciting.

Paris fashion week is more Indian than ever, with two designers from the subcontinent cementing their place at style's top table. Rahul Mishra confirmed his reputation as one of fashion's rising stars with an autumn winter womenswear collection of great restraint and purity. In contrast, the never less-than-spectacular Manish Arora bathed in the glory of being awarded one of France's highest honours by filling his catwalk with celebrity models that included the artist Sophie Calle.
