Catwalk calendar row overshadows Paris ready-to-wear shows

The fashion circus hits Paris Tuesday as the women's autumn-winter ready-to-wear shows come to town, with the industry deeply divided over the catwalk calendar and three major houses still without designers. Many are curious to see how the 34-year-old one-time refugee, who made his name with gritty oversized streetwear, will shake up the venerable label, once a favourite with Jackie Kennedy and European royalty. Three of France's major labels are still without artistic directors after a string of shock departures at the end of 2015 that saw Raf Simons leave Dior for “personal reasons” and Alber Elbaz pushed out at Lanvin.

The Italian driving fashion’s mobile revolution

Posthumously however the Apple founder is becoming an icon of the luxury fashion business as the smartphone technology he pioneered shakes up a sector of the industry initially slow to embrace the Internet. Ask Federico Marchetti, the Italian CEO of Yoox Net-A-Porter (YNAP), the fashion e-tail heavyweight that shifted 1.7 billion euros worth of designer gear and luxury goods last year.

Armani applies a velvet touch to suit revival

Giorgio Armani showed his velvet touch on Monday as he brought down the curtain on a Milan fashion week heralded as marking a revival of the suit-based womenswear he pioneered in the 1980s. Velvet has always been one of the Milanese maestro's favourite materials and it is ubiquitous in his autumn-winter collection: black as the darkest night and, as he put it in his collection notes, dense, tactile and mysterious. The first two models to emerge from backstage set the tone: the first in a tightly-tailored three-quarter-length black velvet coat over predominately pink slacks, the second in a cropped, pink suit jacket worn atop black velvet trousers.

Armani’s black velvet, Missoni’s knits wrap Milan fashion

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian MILAN (Reuters) – Giorgio Armani wrapped Milan Fashion Week on Monday with a fall collection for his main line dedicated to luxurious black velvet. The 81-year-old Italian, whose designs were worn by Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio and nominee Cate Blanchett at Sunday's Academy Awards, made the material the protagonist of his autumn/winter 2016/2017 line, using it in trousers, tops, coats and glittering evening wear. Models stepped onto the catwalk in round collared black velvet jackets paired with wide leg trousers.
