A sneak peek at the MET Costume Institute’s fashion exhibition ‘Manus x Machina’

The exhibition, which opens on May 5, explores the link between the handmade and the machine-made in the worlds of haute couture and ready-to-wear. “Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made, but recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” said Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. Recently released photos reveal that the show will include a “wedding ensemble” by Karl Lagerfeld for the Chanel Autumn/Winter 2014-15 haute couture collection, and an evening dress by Yves Saint Laurent for the Autumn/Winter 1969-70 haute couture show.
