Chanel has a spring in its step as Lagerfeld unveils breezy couture collection

Stepping lightly down the grassy runway, Karl Lagerfeld's doll-like models were a picture of dewy and youthful elegance, from their Princess Leia-like hairstyles to the glossy black tips of their monochrome pumps. This being Chanel, the show started with the tweed suits —  chic two-pieces comprising elongated midi skirts cut close to the body and cropped double-breasted jackets with puffed sleeves for contrast. There were dress coats and trouser suits, all woven from a tasteful palette of creams, golds, peaches and dusky greys, with brooches scattered around for embellishment.

From France's Chanel to Italy's Versace, more than 20 fashion houses will show their spring-summer 2016 haute couture collections, their target some of the world's wealthiest women. On Monday, Dior presented its first haute couture show since designer Raf Simons left in October, with a collection put together by the brand's inhouse team and described as being for the rushing modern woman.

Christian Dior puts on a dreamy display for first couture collection without Raf Simons

The couture house of ‪Schiaparelli‬ knows how to tickle the senses, and its Spring 2015 runway show on Monday went so far as involving the tastebuds. There were a handful of boxy jackets and knee-length skirts on show, but the majority of the collection was dominated by full-length, diaphanous dresses that were both ethereal — thanks to their hazy finish and skimming structure — and modern, thanks to the tongue-in-cheek food references that littered the designs and nodded to the motifs that Elsa Schiaparelli was known for in the 1930s, such as the Lobster dress created with Surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
