Bangladeshi slum kids work over 60 hours a week to make clothes: research

By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – One third of children living in the slums of Bangladesh’s capital spend more than 60 hours a week making clothes for the garment sector, well beyond the legal working limit, a London-based thinktank said on Wednesday. The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) said 32 percent of children aged between 10 and 14 living in Dhaka’s slum settlements were out of school and engaged in full-time work in clothing factories – according to a survey of 2,700 children. “Our survey raises serious concerns over the issue of child labor in the supply of garments from factories in Bangladesh to consumers in Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere,” ODI said.

Chanel puts on the Ritz at Paris fashion show

The legendary French fashion label Chanel paid hommage to its founder Coco Chanel Tuesday with a show at the Ritz in Paris. Pillbox hats with netted veils, long woolly jumpers and scarves, tweed suits glittering with gorgeous inlay and pearls aplenty, you half expected Mademoiselle Chanel to appear for afternoon tea with one of her ne'er do well aristocratic lovers. The redoubtable designer spent a large part of her life living in a suite in the swish hotel, including most controversially during World War II, when a German intelligence officer, Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage, shared her bed.

Gigi Hadid’s top model moments of 2016

The results are in, and Gigi Hadid has been officially crowned 'International Model' of the year at the 2016 Fashion Awards, retaining her place at the very top of the fashion food chain. Having been somewhat typecast as a 'curvy' blonde (by supermodel standards at least), Gigi sent shockwaves rippling through the fashion world when she stepped out onto the Balmain Fall/Winter 2016 catwalk as a brunette for Paris Fashion Week. Starring in Tommy Hilfiger's fragrance campaign 'The Girl' in July, Gigi showed off her playful side, as well as offering a glimpse of the nautical theme that would run through her debut fashion collection, TommyxGigi, launched with the designer in September.

To Audrey with love: a fashion designer’s tribute

One of the fashion world's greatest platonic love stories almost never came to pass, when in the 1950s French couturier Hubert de Givenchy at first refused a request to design for Audrey Hepburn. “When Audrey came to me and asked me to make her dresses for the film 'Sabrina', I didn't know who she was. Luckily for fashionistas everywhere, Hepburn was not to be dissuaded and sweetly invited Givenchy to dinner.
