A sneak peek at the MET Costume Institute’s fashion exhibition ‘Manus x Machina’

The exhibition, which opens on May 5, explores the link between the handmade and the machine-made in the worlds of haute couture and ready-to-wear. “Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made, but recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” said Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. Recently released photos reveal that the show will include a “wedding ensemble” by Karl Lagerfeld for the Chanel Autumn/Winter 2014-15 haute couture collection, and an evening dress by Yves Saint Laurent for the Autumn/Winter 1969-70 haute couture show.

Fashion meets architecture: the biggest looks from Paris haute couture

Architectural fashion was the name of the game at the Spring 2016 Haute Couture shows in Paris this week, where bold structures and exaggerated silhouettes dominated the runways. Stephane Rolland mastered the look with a show-stopping postbox red layered dress that fanned outwards in a choppy, sculpted fashion. Elsewhere on the catwalks, Giambattista Valli sent out tiered gowns featuring triangular layer upon layer of stiff, frothy organza, and Alexis Mabille played with loose, voluminous structures that riffed on breezy nightwear but were in fact fitted to protrude outwards from the body.

From Bowie-mania to enchanted fairytales: Maison Margiela, Franck Sorbier and Elie Saab shine on the couture runways

If there's one thing Maison Margiela specializes in, it's putting on a show, and the couture house didn't disappoint in Paris Wednesday. Under the guidance of star designer John Galliano, the Spring 2016 collection was a riot of influences, each bolder and brighter than the last. The makeup, which included lipstick prints all over the face and neck and zig-zagged eye patches, seemed to be an homage to the late David Bowie, who would almost certainly have approved of the glittering gold boots and metallic trousers on show, and indeed the entire collection channeled the zany creativity that both the musician and Galliano have in common.
